“Avengers” Clobbers Box Office Records

Batman and Harry Potter were forced to step aside this afternoon when Disney released their sales figures for The Avengers. The Marvel team-up scored an astounding $200.3 million in the past three days in the United States, setting the record for the highest grossing weekend by a wide margin. The record was previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $169 million and followed closely by The Dark Knight which raked in $152 million.

Avengers got a boost from IMAX 3D ticket sales and insanely positive word of mouth (you can read our own Luther Anderson’s rave here). The flick holds a rare A+ Cinemascore, as well as a 93% on RottenTomatoes. Many thought The Dark Knight Rises would be gunning for the record later this summer, and it looks like Warner Brothers will have to seriously step up there game if they want to take this trophy out of Marvel’s case.

The Avengers is in theaters everywhere right now.
