Not for Faint of Heart, Jan 11, 2005

You've all read how this is the story of two couples who hook up and break up in every conceivable heterosexual combination. True. You've heard that the acting is superb. Also true. Clive Owen should finally get all the attention he is due for this one. You've probably also heard that these characters are awful to each other. Oh so true. Not just awful -- brutal, horrible, sickening even. I can usually deal with crude language in movies, but it was hard to hear a lot of this. In one scene, after confessing his own infidelity, Clive's character forces Julia Roberts' character to tell him every lurid detail of her infidelity. It is very hard to watch. I'm all for honesty, but the pain these characters deliberately inflict on each other is beyond belief. There are humorous moments, as when Clive's Dr. Larry (a dermatologist) hides in a hospital office to access internet porn. See it for the nose-hair close look at relationships gone wrong. searing dialogue and great acting, but don't even think about going on a date. Go alone or with a friend. And please, don't go if you're under 21. It's not a titillating look at sex at all. In fact, there is practically no nudity. Even Natalie Portman as a stripper is not there for the gazing. This is an assault on the ears, not a treat for the eyes, although Clive Owen sure looks dishy!
