Sparkle - Film Review

I popped in the Sparkle movie into my dvd player not knowing what to expect. This is a story about Sam Sparks, a young man who relocated with his single mother from Liverpool to London. Sam first serves drinks in local bars and finds the strictness of the owner difficult to understand when he tried to mingle with the customers. As luck would have it, he overhears a conversation that enables him to butter up a woman named Sheila who he ends up sleeping with. Sheila then hires him as a highly paid assistant at her PR firm.

Of course things seem to go fine until situations arise which put pressure on Sam. His mother wants to meet his new girlfriend, but he seems embarrassed to tell her about Sheila… I’m guessing because of Sheila’s age. Another difficulty appears when he meets a woman close to his own age that he falls in love with. Along side of Sam’s story is his single mother’s unfolding of career and relationship.

I found myself wanting to keep watching to find out whose dirty little secrets would come out of the closet and when. Some of this movie seemed predictable, but in general, the story and acting kept my attention. It’s a neat little movie to pop in on a rainy day.

Directed by: Tom Hunsinger Neil Hunter
