DVD and Book Review : Book of Cool

The Book Of Cool
written by Fred Rees & Dominic Sheridan
Designed by Dylan Ryan Byrne

Have you ever seen a complicated sports stunt or card trick and wished ruefully that you had the necessary skill to duplicate it? Well, now you do. The book of Cool is the ultimate guide to mastering the seemingly impossible in no time flat. "You can learn this in one day," says bar flaring champion Christian Delpech in the book. If that is an exaggeration, it's only a slight one. This set, containing three instructional DVD's, shows how to perform such feats as frisbee throws, street basketball, cards and magic, golf skills, bar flaring, pool shots, and more. And each skill is taught by an expert, so you can be certain you're learning from a master. In addition, the discs are accompanied by a book, which breaks down each action in a series of photographs. This is particularly helpful since the video shows each activity in real time and it can be easy to lose certain nuances. For example, in the section on frisbee throws I found it difficult to duplicate the grip on certain throws. The book provides the necessary detail through pictures. Other details are supplied as well: in the section on street soccer, while the video displays the key moves, the book explains in what situations each move would be appropriate.

The section on gun tricks begins with a disclaimer warning the user to avoid real guns. It goes on to break down enough draws, spins and flips that I began to wonder if I had been hasty in dismissing my boyhood ambition to become a cowboy. The later chapter on ropes and whips provides a useful supplement, featuring the lasso techniques no prospective dude rancher would want to do without. I'm joking, of course. I do not foresee anyone changing careers as a result of the Book of Cool. Nevertheless, it's interesting, and I have no doubt you can learn some useful stuff from it. Anyone looking for a leg up in the game or sport of their choice is definitely advised to look here. I myself have picked up a few tricks I will almost certainly be employing next time I shoot some 8-ball with the gang.
